The late Erick Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra could always be counted on to give at least excellent performances of popular classical works. In the present album they do just that... again. Here we have seven familiar and not so familiar concert overtures. Like EK and the CPO, the late Telarc label could always be counted on to provide at least excellent sound of whatever they recorded, and THEY do it again, too, as well. Each is a rousing overture of between six and 12 minutes or so. Each overture is given a superb reading in stunning sound. The Cincinnati musicians certainly had their week's caffeine allotment before the recording sessions. They play with their usual superb precision, sonority, and enthusiasm. What more can you ask for? It isn't that a serious musician or music lover plays these overtures over and over, but you have to at least have a copy, right? I listen to the disc every year or two but know I'm going to enjoy myself. Very Highly Recommended!!!

Favorite overtures is the perfect name for it. The Light Cavalry, the Fra Diavolo, the Zampa, the Dichter Und Bauer Overtures, etc., etc., all performed by the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra conducted by Eric Kunzel - names out of the past that were among the best at performing this kind of light classical music.
